meet "stako"
Sergiy Stakhovsky owes his venture into tennis to his
Grandfather. When he was six years old his Grandfather would bring
him to the Tennis Center in Kiev, Ukraine. His coaches started to
notice Sergiy's great talent and drive to win at the age of nine. It
was then he was removed from the group clinics and given a private
coach. Sergiy competed in swimming until he was 14. It was then he
realized his dream was to become the best in the world. Sergiy
believes the best is yet to come and will stop and nothing to
accomplish this task.
Keeping a great relationship with his family is important to
Sergiy. His father, Eduard, is a professor of Urology. He has two
younger brothers: Leonard and Aleksandr.
A proud member of the Ukrainian Davis Cup team, Sergiy is
currently ranked 208 on the ATP tour. Sergiy is a proven winner in
both singles and doubles. In 2006, "Stako" captured doubles titles
in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Spain, Czech Republic, and most recently
in his home country of Ukraine. However, his best moments have been
his key singles victories on the ATP tour and his US Open Junior
Final.
In October of 2006, after winning his way through qualifying in
the Kremlin Cup, Sergiy went on to steal a win away from "Blogging
King" Dmitry Tursonov. This key win over the Davis Cup hero and top
20 ATP player proved he has a big game to go along with his big
size. Besides his victory over Tursonov, Sergiy has gained victories
over several other top 100 players including Mario Ancic, Julien
Benneteau, Christophe Rochus and Justin Gimelstob.
