Amritraj Ousted by Stakhovsky
Prakash Amritraj - son of a famed Indian player Vijay - might have glistened in the setting sun with the diamond studs in his ears and his gold necklace. But he finished a despondent loser to thirteenth seed Sergiy Stakhovsky of the Ukraine in the second round of Wimbledon qualifying.

They began the match in warm conditions on Court Five but by the time Stakhovsky ran out a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 winner in 90 minutes, spectators were shivering in a cool breeze.

Stakhovsky made such an impressive start that it was a surprise he was eventually taken to three sets. In the first set the Ukranian won the first point in all but one of the games. He served well, hit his round strokes aggressively, and Amritraj was always chasing the game. He dropped the sixth game to love and within 28 minutes Stakhovsky had won the first set, finishing with an ace.

But a different, more resolute Amritraj, took greater control of his own game in the second set, sweeping to a 5-0 lead. Stakhovsky looked bewildered by the growing confidence of Amritraj who mirrored his opponent by ending the set with an ace to square the match after almost an hour.

In the final set the command of the match turned back to Stakhovsky who gained a 2-0 lead to lift his confidence. Although Stakhovsky lost serve in the fifth game he broke Amritraj immediately and held on to his advantage to take the match.

Amritraj would have loved to follow his father into the Wimbledon main draw: Vijay, who was watching intensely at the side of the court, played Wimbledon for 17 years and was twice a quarter finalist in 1974 and 1987. But Prakash will have to wait.

Stakhovsky, ranked 133rd in the world, was not that far way from gaining a place in the main draw by right. "I nearly the made main draw before but I still have to make it," he said.

DREAM VICTORY FOR STAKHOVSKY
Sergiy Stakhovsky's dream week at the Zagreb Indoors had the perfect ending as he beat Ivan Ljubicic to claim the title. Stakhovsky posted a 7-5 6-4 victory in Saturday's final to win his first ATP title.

The Ukrainian, ranked a lowly 209 in the world, only got into the tournament as a lucky loser from qualifying when Michael Llodra withdrew at the last minute. The 22-year-old Ukrainian becomes the first lucky loser to win an ATP title since Christian Miniussi at Sao Paulo in 1991. He is the fifth player to accomplish the achievement.

Stakhovsky took full advantage of his late entry, beating second seed Ivo Karlovic in round one and then taking out number eight seed Janko Tipsarevic in the quarter-finals. Home hope Ljubicic, the top seed, had hoped to stop Stakhovsky's run but could not break his opponent's serve during the final. In contrast, Stakhovsky gained key breaks in the 11th game of the opening set and the ninth game of the second. He said: "I definitely surprised myself with my mental side that I could stand over to win the matches. It wasn't easy, to go when you serve for the match against against Karlovic, or Tipsarevic or any other player, in the far stages of the tournament such as the quarter-finals, semi-finals or final. It's really not easy.

I am just surprised the way I handled this. "For me it was easier because I was the lucky loser and under less pressure than he was because he was in front of the home crowd. But it was a really close match and it's hard to explain what happened. It was just a close match, and I was just a little bit more lucky, (it was) a couple of shots that actually decided the match and I am really happy to win this title." Stakhovsky's best tournament in eight ATP events prior to this was a quarter-final appearance in Milan in 2005.

Ljubicic paid credit to his conqueror, saying: "Sergiy played unbelieveable. "Since he lost in qualies, he played some fantastic matches (against) Karlovic, Tipsarevic, Bolelli and myself and he was just too good. I tried everything and it didn't work. "He won his first title and it's great for him but I am also happy with the finals. I am feeling good and hope my form is going to come back more consistently and now with the Masters Series coming up, the last two years I've played well there and hope to play well again."

Sergiy Stakhovsky becomes first "lucky loser" to win ATP crown in 17 years in Zagreb
March 2, 2008 ZAGREB, Croatia: Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine won his initial ATP title with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over top-seeded Ivan Ljubicic on Saturday, becoming the first "lucky loser" to win a tour crown in 17 years.

The 22-year-old, 209th-ranked Stakhovsky faced only one break point, converted two of five of his own break opportunities, and prevailed in 1 hour, 49 minutes. He improved to 5-0 this season and became the first player to win a tour event after advancing from qualifying as a lucky loser since Argentine Christian Miniussi won Sao Paulo in 1991.

Stakhovsky, who came into the tournament with a career 6-13 match record, is only the fourth man in the history of the tour to achieve the feat. He had not played on the main tour since San Jose more than a year ago and his previous best showing in eight attempts was a quarterfinal appearance in Milan in 2005.

Ljubicic was his third seeded victim, having also beaten No. 2 Ivo Karlovic and No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic.
